TESTIMONIALS

WORDS FROM VOLUNTEERS, PARTICIPANTS, AND CARETAKERS OF THE PROGRAM

"It's nice to volunteer and give back to a sport that has helped (myself) both physically and mentally. It's also a great workout for those capable of volunteering or more physically participating (paddling). Everybody has something to contribute, everyone."

-Tim P., Volunteer

Hanna loves the water and is a good swimmer. Coming to HAPA gives her a sense of independence and she enjoys the water. It also helps her with her social skills. It is a safe group that is well protected on the water. We've been with it since near the beginning and usually come over after Special Olympics on Saturday morning. We appreciate the hard work that the group puts in to everything."

-Bertie S., Caretaker

"It can get you in the water without actually being in the water. The people are great and everybody has fun. I've been doing it for a while, the first time I went out it was just "Wow." I had a blast and it is something really fun to do. I really enjoy it, especially since with sports it can be hard to find people to help you."

-Sherry, Participant

"Coming and volunteering reminds me how grateful I should be for every day. One person helping someone else can have a huge impact on their lives. There is a high priority for safety for both the volunteers and participants, and we enjoy a day of friendship and family with paddling and our lunch program following the ocean activities."

-Suzi M., Volunteer

"I have a good time when I come. It feels great to be able to give back to the community and to just see the smiles on the participants' faces."

-Jim, Volunteer

"Participating (volunteering) in the program gives an opportunity to contribute to a group of people that you normally wouldn't have contact with, to help them and have fun doing it. You get to enjoy the 'ohana of all the volunteers. You can come out not knowing how to paddle, and we can help you learn."

-Kyle, Volunteer

"There is so much love in the program, and I feel fortunate to be part of something that gives back to the community as well as puts smile on so many people's faces. It is special to get to experience things like hearing an austistic girl sing in a canoe and getting comfortable in the canoe and becoming more outgoing. It is truly a comfortable and safe place/haven for everyone."

-Judy, Volunteer

"HAPA is a great program to be involved with as a participant or as a volunteer. It is a safe venue in which those with disabilities can experience being on the open ocean in a canoe with the wind blowing through their hair and over their skin as the canoe glides through the water. The mottos of the program is safety first, fun second. As I have volunteered over the past 18 months, HAPA has lived up to this motto each and every time. The program has been just as rewarding for me as it has for the participants. Seeing the smile on the participants' precious faces as they return to shore knowing that they contributed what they could to paddling the canoe and know that they accomplished it as a team member is my reward. Thank you for the feeling of 'ohana that HAPA provides."

-Phil, Volunteer

WE WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAM TO:

"THOSE WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS."

"ANYBODY THAT HAS DIFFICULTY DOING THINGS BY THEMSELVES, BUT WANT TO GET INTO THE WATER."

"ANYBODY. IT IS ABOUT GETTING OUT ON THE WATER AND EXPERIENCING THE CANOE AND THE OCEAN."

"ANYONE WHO WANTS TO START GETTING INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY, AND IS LOOKING FOR AN EASY AND FUN WAY TO DO SO. THERE REALLY ISN'T ANY LABOR INVOLVED AND IT'S OUTSIDE."

"SO MANY PEOPLE, HAPA PROVIDES SO MANY GREAT OPPORTUNITIES AND THERE IS A NICE SOCIAL ASPECT. THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT LITTLE JOBS TO DO, AND YOU GET TO COME TO THE OCEAN AND GIVE BACK AT THE SAME TIME."
